Packing supplies calculator

Running out of tape halfway through packing is a classic moving-day problem. MovingBoxCalc works out the supplies to buy from your box count: one roll of 55–60 yard tape for every 20 boxes, about 0.4 lb of packing paper per box and a couple of markers for labels.

Saved you some time? Leave a tip, entirely optional.

For a 2 bedroom home with 55 boxes that is 3 rolls of tape and 22 lb of packing paper. Buy a little extra: most stores take back unused supplies.

How the moving box calculator works

MovingBoxCalc starts from typical box counts published by movers for an average household with about one person per bedroom, from 24 boxes for a studio to about 125 for a five-bedroom house. Minimal packers get 20% fewer boxes and people with lots of belongings 30% more. Each person beyond the number of bedrooms adds 10% to the small, medium and large boxes. Every count is rounded up. Supplies follow from the total: one roll of packing tape per 20 boxes, 0.4 lb of packing paper per box and a couple of markers. The cost uses the box prices you enter, which default to typical retail prices, and the truck size comes from the home size.

About one roll per 20 boxes, so 3 rolls for a 2 bedroom move and 4–5 for a 3 bedroom house.

How much packing paper do I need?

About 0.4 lb per box on average, more if you have lots of dishes and glassware.
